About
Our History
WASPS Basketball Club was founded in 1988 after one simple question changed everything.
When Scott Edgecumbe asked his parents if he could play basketball, they discovered that every local club had a waiting list. Rather than waiting for an opportunity, Peter and Elizabeth Edgecumbe decided to create one. Scott recruited seven friends from Wantirna South Primary School, and with family friend and passionate basketballer Jeff Cox volunteering as coach, WASPS Basketball Club was born.
Our first-ever game was played on 10 May 1988 at Knox Stadium on Court 1—back when the stadium had just three courts. While the team didn't score in its first two games, they celebrated their first basket in game three. After gaining access to training facilities several weeks into the season, the team continued to improve and enjoyed a successful first year.
As interest in the club grew, more boys' teams were formed, and in the summer of 1990 WASPS proudly entered its first girls' team. The club has continued to grow ever since.
The name WASPS comes from our origins at Wantirna South Primary School, where the club first began.
From a single team in 1988, WASPS has grown into one of the largest domestic basketball clubs in Victoria. Today, we have over 70 teams and more than 500 players representing the club across all age groups and skill levels.
At WASPS, we believe basketball is for everyone. Whether you're playing in A Grade or E Grade, our goal is to place every player in a team where they can develop, enjoy the game, and be part of a supportive community. Every player, coach, volunteer, and family contributes to making WASPS the club it is today, and we are proud to be one of the largest and most respected clubs within the Knox Basketball Association.
